Misconceptions of Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a mental state of heightened concentration, calm, and relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. A hypnotherapist utilizes the power of suggestion to support a person to change areas of their lives they do not like, or make things better that they want to improve.

National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) certified follow a very strict code of ethics.

The truth is that professionals that offer hypnotherapy have special skills, an understanding of psychology and the human psyche, experience in working with people, but no special powers. With enough effort and education, anyone would be able to induce a formal state of hypnosis onto someone else.

  • Incorrect. While some people are more suggestible to hypnosis, it really comes down to a person’s motivation and willingness to focus. Everyone is susceptible to a certain degree. If you want to work and put effort into it, the opportunity is better that it you will receive the benefit of the investment.

  • Incorrect. This is the opposite. The people that can concentrate well and have creative imagination make the best subjects for hypnotherapy. All of us are susceptible to suggestion, but it is just a matter to what degree.

  • Incorrect. Hypnotherapy cannot make a person do anything that they don’t want to do. It can support a person to help them achieve something they want for themselves or stop doing something they no longer want to do. But there is no opportunity for a hypnotherapist to make someone do anything against their will.

  • Incorrect. Hypnosis is a form of deep relaxation that has lasting benefits for many reasons in our lives. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state. So, if you want to feel balanced within yourself hypnosis is a pathway to be able to achieve that.

  • Incorrect. It is not possible to get stuck in hypnosis. Hypnosis is natural and normal state that we all enter at one point or another. Hypnosis is subjective and everyone will experience it differently. The worst that could happen would be a person achieves a deep restful state that will result in waking up soon afterward.

  • Incorrect. You are not asleep or unconscious. You are awake and aware of what is happening around you. When a person is in a state of hypnosis, they may feel as though their body has gone to sleep, but their mind is still alert, awake, and aware.

  • Incorrect. The action of prayer could easily be compared to a hypnotic state. Hypnosis is naturally occurring, helpful, and a positive state. Nobody can make you do anything that you do not want to do.
